Elizabeth Allen has always had a passion for fabric, amassing piles of it while growing up in Manchester, Massachusetts. After graduating from Vassar College with a degree in French Lit, she hi-tailed it to Paris where she landed the incredible job of Bureau Fashion Editor of WWD and W Magazine. The ultimate, intimate exposure to the behind-the-scenes world of French and English designers was, obviously, a jaw dropping education. She jumped to the other side of the runway to work with Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, whose unparalleled creativity inspired her own.
Back in NYC and working as a fashion editor and stylist, the stacks of fabrics climbed the walls of her 5th floor walk-up. Looking to justify her flea market fabric binges, Elizabeth took to her sewing machine and walked into NYC's ABC Carpet & Home with a suitcase of pillows and walked out with an order. Such was the spontaneous creation of Elizabeth Allen Atelier in 1998, which then grew from a pillow line into a complete bedding collection designed with Elizabeth's exclusive prints. EAA is now recognized for its unique, polished and beautifully made bedding and fabrics. Baby clothing collections are the newest addition and are equally delightful.
The Atelier moved from the gritty NYC garment district to the much quieter shores of San Diego over a decade ago but its core values remain the same -beauty, quality, value. 95% of the collection is sewn locally under her finicky eye. The fabrics are printed in a family-run mill in India and pre-washed six times so nothing but the smoothest cotton touches your skin. Our workrooms are intimate and personal. Elizabeth Allen Atelier is a labor of passion and patience, where custom design, craftsmanship and personal service come before all else.
